Meiosis 6.2

We discussed the process of somatic cells (any cell of the body except sperm and egg cells) dividing into identical cells known as Mitosis, but Meiosis is the process of gamete cells (sex cells) dividing.

In Mitosis the end result are 2 identical DIPLOID CELLS (2 sets of DNA Chromosomes)....So 46 Chromosomes in each cell!

In Meiosis the end result are 4 different HAPLOID CELLS (Half the set of DNA Chromosomes)....So 23 chromosomes in each cell!

These are the phases of Meiosis:

The cell divides just like Mitosis during the Meiosis 1 but....It divides one more time but does not replicate DNA .
